Dillard House, Dillard, Ga. (about 5 miles from the Center on Warwoman)

A family-owned restaurant and motel surrounded by pastoral views of the mountains. The large, clean bedrooms feature sliding glass doors to outdoor patios overlooking horses available to ride. When out of town family and friends visit in great numbers, many of them become guests of the Dillard House. The Dillard House dining room—with its huge, country-style meals—is a short walk from the guest rooms. Other restaurants are a short drive away. Room rates begin at $89.00. Holiday Inn Express, Dillard, Ga. (about 7 miles from the Center on Warwoman)

This standard motel is exactly what you’d expect from a chain hotel. Rooms are clean; continental breakfast is included in the room price. Some rooms have fabulous views.

Old Clayton Inn, Main Street, downtown Clayton (about 1.5 miles from the Center on Warwoman)

An old-fashioned inn with a nice homey feel. Rooms are comfortable and clean. The lobby restaurant serves Southern country-style breakfast (included in the cost of your room), lunch and dinner. Other restaurants, shops and galleries are within easy walking distance in downtown Clayton.

Cottages and Cabins

Mountain Aire Cottages, Old 441, Clayton, Ga. (about 2 miles from the Center on Warwoman)

50’s era cluster of cottages on the northern edge of downtown Clayton. The cottages have been recently renovated and updated with fully equipped kitchens, luxurious beds, cable TV and a playground for kids. The owners live on-site and are friendly and welcoming. Cottages of various sizes are available. Convenient to everything. Rates vary by season and cottage. 706-782-4577

Cherry Laurel Creek Cabins, outside Clayton (8.5 miles from the Center on Warwoman)

These secluded cabins are in the national forest and offer a woodsier feel. Easy access to amazing trails, waterfalls, etc. Several cabins of varying sizes available. Rates vary by season and cabin. 706-782-6757

Cottontail Cottage, Clayton, Ga. (near Clayton) I have been hearing good things about these cottages but have not seen them myself. Call Peter (!!) for more details at 706-782-6223.

Andy’s Trout Farm, Dillard, Ga. (12 miles from the Center on Warwoman)

This working trout farm offers trout fishing and small, charming cabins tucked into the woods along a rushing creek. If you are looking for a remote setting, and don’t mind the drive, this is a beautiful place. Rates vary by season and cabin size. 706-782-2550.

Bed and Breakfasts

Sylvan Falls Mill B & B, Rabun Gap, Ga. (7 miles from the Center on Warwoman)

This historic grist mill is now a B & B. Guests enjoy a delicious breakfast featuring locally grown food and baked goods made from organic grains ground in the mill. Breakfast room overlooks the waterfall that powers the mill. 706-746-5485

Beechwood Inn, Clayton, Ga. (2 miles away from the Center on Warwoman)

A luxurious B & B that is a paradise for wine lovers. You can also enjoy fine gourmet dining with wine pairings most Saturday nights.  706-782-5485

Camping

Rabun County has many beautiful campgrounds. Keep in mind that due to our elevation, snow and ice can occur here until early May. Camping is only recommended between May and October. Advanced reservations are required for most campsites.

Black Rock Mountain State Park, Mountain City, Ga. (4 miles from the Center on Warwoman)

This fantastic state park atop Black Rock Mountain includes excellent hiking trails, campsites, cabins and RV hook-ups. It is extremely popular, so you must book early. The high, winding road up the mountain into the park may be closed due to ice on occasion between October and May. Campsites are $25 per night. Cottages are $110 per night and can house up to eight. 706-746-6299

Things to Do in Rabun County

Most of our programs are held at The Center on Warwoman, which also offers other classes, such as yoga and meditation, movies and other community events.

If you’ve heard about the Foxfire Books, you’ll want to make time to visit the Foxfire Center and Museum in Mountain City. Students from Rabun County schools created the Foxfire Books. The Center is dedicated to preserving Appalachian culture.

 Georgia Mountain Foodways Alliance provides a directory of growers, businesses and events in the North Georgia Mountains that feature local food, wine, honey, cheese and more.

Contemporary art and gifts created by local and regional artists  may be found at Globe Gallery, on Highway 76 East where it crosses Highway 441 (across the road from MacDonald’s, in Clayton. Phone (706) 782-0071 for hours and directions. (no website)

Grapes and Beans Cafe, known locally as “The Bean,” is our favorite local hang out. Open from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM daily, with great salads, soups and sandwiches featuring seasonal and local ingredients, free trade coffee, cappuccino and espresso plus a delightful selection of local and international wines by the glass or bottle. Located in downtown Clayton. 

At 9:00 AM every Saturday morning from late May and until the first frost, Simply Home Grown Marketa lively farmer’s market—offers organic and locally grown fruits, flowers and vegetables; goat cheese; organic cornmeal, polenta and flour; home made breads and pastries; fresh herbs and much more. Located on the sidewalk in front of Butler’s II Antiques on Main Street in downtown Clayton.

Across the street from the Saturday morning market in downtown Clayton (51 Main Street) is Main Street Gallery, which specializes in self-taught art also known as vernacular, outsider or visionary art, along with Southern Folk pottery and furniture.
