Georgia/Southeastern Plant Information

Atlanta Botanical Gardens- A jewel in the heart of Atlanta. In the Garden’s collections are medicinal plants from all over the world and many native herbs.

Georgia Native Plant Society – This active educational group meets monthly in the Atlanta Metro area. GNPS sponsors monthly lectures, an annual conference, member newsletter and plant rescues.

Protected Plants of Georgia – Before wildcrafting any herbs in Georgia, be sure to learn which Georgia plants are listed as protected. This data base is organized by county. Plants appearing on this list should not be collected for any reason.  

State Botanical Garden of Georgia - This garden at the University of Georgia, Athens, Ga., has an impressive collection of plants from all over the world. They sponsor educational seminars and symposia throughout the year. The Native Plant and Chinese Medicinal Herb Gardens are highly recommended.

Wild Flowers of Appalachia  – Visit this site to see pictures of native Appalachian herbs and wildflowers.

Dr. Duke’s Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Database – Classic resource for plant information by the esteemed Dr. James Duke.

David Winston’s Website – David’s website features information about ordering his books and recordings of his lectures. He also sells rare books on ethnobotanical and herbal topics.

The Tillitson Institute of Natural Health - Offers extensive information on herbal practice from a Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic approach. Good place to learn about clinical herbalism.

American Herb Association – National organization of herbalists and herb lovers. The website features lots of articles.

American Herbalists Guild – The guild brings together medical herbalists of all traditions in the United States. Student, regular and professional memberships include a subscription to the Journal of the American Herbalists Guild and reduced rates at their annual conference. They also offer peer-reviewed professional membership for clinical herbalists.

Georgia Herbalists Guild - A regional chapter of the American Herbalists Guild since 1999, this group meets the third Sunday of each month at 6:30 PM at the Atlanta Botanical Garden in mid-town Atlanta . The GHG offers networking, lectures, field trips and other herb activities throughout the year. Their website features a calendar of upcoming meeting topics and other loval events. North Carolina Herb Association - Organization to promote the production, marketing and use of herbs and herb related products through education and research.

United Plant Savers – Dedicated to the preservation of native medicinals through ethical harvesting, propagation and cultivation, education and research, UpS is an organization that deserves the support of all herbalists. Members receive their informative newsletter and discounts on educational events.

Horizon Herbs – This small, family-run company is the place to go for seeds of just about any medicinal herb you can think of.
